Vegan Chocolate Hot Cross Buns

Are we ready for some Easter baking? Even if this year Easter might be different, we still can enjoy a comforting and delicious breakfast or brunch on Sunday. My kids are already planning a feast for Easter and these easy and fluffy vegan double chocolate hot cross buns are on top of the list!

The Recipe

Vegan chocolate hot cross buns

Ingredients

4 1/4 cups / 530 g all-purpose flour

3 teaspoons yeast

1 1/4 cups / 300 ml plant-based milk

1/2 cup / 100 g sugar

1/4 cup / 30 g dark baking cocoa powder

1/2 cup / 110 g vegan butter

1/4 cup / 45 g vegan mini chocolate chips and more to sprinkle on top

1/4 cup / 45 g vegan hazelnut chocolate spread

Instructions

1. In a bowl combine flour, yeast, milk, sugar, cocoa powder, butter and chocolate chips and knead by hand until smooth.

2. Line an 8 x 8 inch (20 x 20 cm) baking form with parchment paper. Divide the dough into 9 pieces (or if you like smaller buns, make 16). Roll the pieces and place the buns into the baking form. Sprinkle with more chocolate chips (optional) and let rise of about 2 hours. With a sharp knife cut a cross in each bun.

3. Preheat oven to 350 °F /180 °C.

4. Bake for about 30-40 minutes (baking time depends on the size of your buns).

5. Place the hazelnut chocolate spread into a piping bag and pipe a cross onto each bun. ENJOY!
